Stomatology

Stomatology is the branch of medicine responsible for the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and conditions related to the oral cavity and its adjoining structures, such as the teeth, gums, tongue, palate, oral mucosa and salivary glands. Although nowadays it is often confused with dentistry, stomatology has a broader focus, encompassing not only dental health, but also the management of medical problems affecting the mouth and surrounding areas, including the recognition of signs of systemic diseases that manifest in this region.

What kind of diseases does a stomatologist treat?

A stomatologist treats conditions such as:

  • Dental caries and periodontal disease.
  • Oral lesions (ulcers, sores, aphthae).
  • Infections such as oral candidiasis.
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Oral cancer.
  • Congenital malformations, such as cleft lip and palate.
  • Oral manifestations of systemic diseases (diabetes, HIV, etc.).

Treatments include:

  • Minor oral surgeries (extractions, dental implants, etc.).
  • Treatment of periodontal diseases.
  • Therapies for temporomandibular dysfunction.

Types of surgery

  • Oral mucosal lesions
  • Oral mucosal lesions
  • Oral lesions with systemic involvement
  • Cysts and tumors
Oral mucosal lesions
  • The diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal lesions covers a wide field of these lesions and diseases with diverse manifestations in the mucosa of the mouth. They can be of traumatic, bacterial or viral origin. An oral surgeon or stomatologist is the most suitable professional to diagnose and manage such pathology. Our unit has highly qualified personnel with academic hospital experience in the treatment of various lesions of the oral mucosa.

Oral mucosal lesions
    • Benign fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillofacial complex form an important group and are a challenge for diagnosis and treatment. They can be destructive osteolytic or deforming osteoproliferative. Our unit offers an integral and multidisciplinary management that includes imaging studies such as bone scintigraphy, tomography and biopsies for histopathological study. These diagnostic techniques are necessary to predetermine an accurate management plan.

Oral lesions with systemic involvement
    • There are a myriad of systemic diseases with oral manifestations that are difficult to diagnose and require serious and disciplined management to determine such association, thus providing an early diagnosis and effective management of the systemic problem. After a detailed clinical analysis, it must be confirmed by biopsy to design a specific treatment plan. We provide comprehensive and multidisciplinary care because our unit has professional experts in maxillofacial surgery and stomatology and the collaboration of recognized pathologists in the maxillofacial area.

Cysts and tumors
      • Odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts and tumors are usually benign and may involve the jaws and adjacent structures. The diagnosis is made by means of imaging: radiographs, CT scans, MRI and scintigraphy.
