Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull, allowing essential movements such as chewing, speaking and yawning. TMJ disorders can cause pain, clicking, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, and tightness in the facial muscles. Treatment varies depending on the cause and includes physical therapies, dental splints, medication or, in severe cases, surgery. An evaluation by a TMJ specialist is essential to properly diagnose and treat these conditions.

What are the most common causes of TMJ problems?

Some causes include:

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching).
  • Injuries to the jaw or head.
  • Arthritis in the joint.
  • Dental misalignment or bite problems.
  • Emotional stress causing muscle tension.

What are the treatments for TMJ problems?

  • Treatment depends on the cause and severity, but may include:
    • Conservative therapy: Use of splints or night guards to reduce bruxism.
    • Medications: Analgesics, muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs.
    • Physical therapy: Exercises to strengthen the jaw muscles and reduce tension.
    • Manejo del estrés: Relaxation techniques to reduce the impact of stress.
    • Surgery: In severe cases or when other treatments do not work, joint surgery may be considered.

What are the symptoms of a TMJ problem?

  • Jaw pain or tenderness.
  • Clicking or popping noises when opening or closing the mouth.
  • Difficulty or blockage when moving the jaw.
  • Ear pain or ringing sensation.
  • Headaches or neck pain.
  • Wear or damage to teeth due to bruxism.
